Story of Sacred Heart of Jesus Picture

Original painting.

January 11, 1991

This website has been dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Whom I had consecrated my episcopal pastoral mission. The Logo of my bishop’s Crest  bears this dedication in Ukrainian: the Love of Christ, Amor Christi.

A Hispanic family in Austin, Texas, venerated this copy of the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. As the family prayed before it in their home, the heart began to bleed on January 11, 1991. The stain of blood is visible over the heart. The family turned to their pastor, Fr. Fred Underwood, a Holy Cross Father, to investigate. Father Underwood believed this was a truly miraculous sign. He brought this image to the Church of San Jose in Austin, Texas; and had many copies of the picture with the bloodstain printed. We have reproduced it here on our web site, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On January 3, 1996 Jesus gave nine promises through a visionary, ‘to those who expose the picture of the Sacred and Bleeding Heart’, and confirmed that the image would bleed again on the fifth anniversary of the first bleeding of January 11 1991.

The Story of Amy Stout and Sue Gregory

In researching the history of the original picture of the Sacred Heart, I learned some of the early history of the devotion to the image of the Sacred and Bleeding Heart. This epistolary anecdote describes some of the singular events that surrounded the devotion to this new image.

…There was the family of Amy Carolyn Stout and her mother Sue Gregory who approached Father Fred to start a mission. They were the ones who got him the trailer. They were Protestants, converted to the Catholic faith through their encounter with Father Fred, or rather their encounter with Jesus through him, in San Jose, Austin, and Texas. Amy and her mother moved to Santa Fe simply holding on to faith (they had no jobs to go to when they moved there) because Jesus had asked them to make the move.

Amy first read the story on the bleeding Sacred Heart in the newspaper in San Jose. Then one day in 1992, a woman who was taking the census in San Jose brought up to her the matter of the bleeding Sacred Heart and Father Fred and told her about the things that were happening then in connection with It. Amy prayed with that woman. At that time she and her mother were still Protestants. Then one day her mother attended a one-day retreat conducted by Father Fred. Amy said that when her mother came home she was very quiet. Then she told her about the incredible things that happened. Many miracles were wrought there. Amy's mother offered to take care of her baby, just so she could attend Father Fred’s healing Mass. Although reluctant at first, Amy decided to go.

While lining up in front of the tabernacle waiting to be prayed over, Amy had her eyes closed. When she opened them, there was Jesus standing before her! She described Our Lord having blue eyes, wearing a white robe, the hem of which was embroidered and “had little pieces hanging.â€ He was looking at the people, with His Hands in front of Him. Then He walked over to Father Fred and stepped back of him and put His Arms and Hands through Father Fred’s arms and hands. Jesus was the One actually doing the laying on of hands. Amy saw that the person being prayed over abruptly fell over, and the same with the other people, as Jesus through Father Fred prayed over them. She prayed to be healed of her addictions. As she was prayed over, she felt the heat on the side of her face, and as she felt His Hands she felt as if electricity went through her all the way to her feet and she rested in the Spirit. As she was in deep sleep Jesus showed her different things in her life. As He touched her heart with His Hand, He told her, “You are forgiven.â€ Also, “Only say the word and you shall be healed.â€

From then on Jesus would communicate with her while she was in front of the bleeding Sacred Heart, and at other times as well. She would hear His voice but not through the ears. Being a Protestant before, she knew very little of Mary.  Jesus taught her about Mary and other things in the Catholic faith that she did not know. She came to have visions. There was one time when Jesus was saying that He is also the Divine Mercy in that sacred picture.

Because of the bleeding Sacred Heart there was “an explosionâ€ or revival of the faith in San Jose. They had to set up a small adoration chapel because of the numbers of people who were coming, even from other parts of the world. Many miraculous healings were happening: AIDS, cancer, autism, etc. Father set up a 50-gal. drum of Holy Water so people could fill up. Many people, including Amy, would sometimes smell wine, or roses by that drum of water. The miracle of the sun happened. Jesus started “speakingâ€ to people in the parish. There was one woman whom He requested to stay with Him in the Chapel most of the time. Sometimes there would be strange mist falling on their heads.

Amy was asked to make an audiotape. Before the incident I’m about to relate happened, Amy had already experienced visions of Mary. This time, Mary started speaking to her while she was still in the Church (at San Jose). Then when she went out, Mary was there. Amy described Mary as having dark hair, blue eyes, and only about 4’1lâ€ tall. Mary told her she was to do the songs, and to put the picture of the bleeding Sacred Heart in front, and not to put any writing on it -- to let only the picture of Jesus occupy the whole front of the tape. Amy said yes, but wondered how to go about producing the tapes since she had no money. Amy's grandmother, who was a Baptist, offered to pay for the whole cost of producing the tapes ($2,000). Afterwards they simply gave away, not sell. The next morning her Baptist grandmother told her that she had the strangest dream:

In the dream the grandmother found herself in a beautiful garden, going to a banquet. There was a Queen with them. In the dream, the grandmother helped the Queen over the wall. Amy told her grandmother, that the Queen was Mary!

Amy's first encounter with Jesus as she related it, happened in 1992 in San Jose, when she was 19 and had a small baby. She said that before then she didn’t know much about Jesus. Since then her life has been transformed. It was there, at 19, that she had a vision, which she told Father Fred, of Jesus taking hold of Father Fred’s arms and taking him to Heaven. Maybe, Amy now thinks, knowing that Father Fred eventually came “homeâ€ to San Jose where he would eventually be buried, that that must have been the meaning - that it was from there that Jesus would take him to Heaven. Jesus had told Amy at one time that Father Fred was His brother. He was a very holy man, and that he would be with Him in Heaven.

One of the alleged local visionaries received a message from Our Lord with the promises. .

The Original Twelve Promises Our Lord Made
 through Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

I wish to recall the original twelve promises that Our Lord had made through Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, (1647-1690), a humble Visitandine of the monastery at Paray-le Monial, that Christ chose to reveal the desires of His Heart and to confide the task of imparting new life to the devotion. These revelations were numerous, and the following apparitions are especially remarkable: that which occurred on the feast of St. John, when Jesus permitted Margaret Mary, as He had formerly allowed St. Gertrude, to rest her head upon His Heart, and then disclosed to her the wonders of His love, telling her that He desired to make them known to all mankind and to diffuse the treasures of His goodness, and that He had chosen her for this work (27 Dec., about 1673); that, probably distinct from the preceding, in which He requested to be honoured under the figure of His Heart of flesh; that, when He appeared radiant with love and asked for a devotion of expiatory love -- frequent Communion, Communion on the First Friday of the month, and the observance of the Holy Hour (probably June or July, 1674); that known as the "great apparition" which took place during the octave of Corpus Christi, 1675, probably on 16 June, when He said, "Behold the Heart that has so loved men ... instead of gratitude I receive from the greater part (of mankind) only ingratitude ...", and asked her for a feast of reparation on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi.

The Twelve Promises of Our Blessed Lord to St. Margaret Mary for those who are devoted to His Sacred Heart (taken from her autobiography and letters):

 1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.
 2. I will give peace in their families.
 3. I will console them in all their troubles.
 4. They shall find in my Heart an assured refuge during life and especially at the hour of death.
 5. I will pour abundant blessings on all their undertakings.
 6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and Infinite Ocean of mercy.
 7. Tepid souls shall become fervent.
 8. Fervent souls shall speedily rise to great perfection.
 9. I will bless the homes in which the image of my Sacred Heart shall be exposed and honored
10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.
11. Those who propagate this devotion shall have their name written in my Heart and it shall never be effaced.
12.  The All-Powerful Love of my Heart will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under my displeasure, nor without receiving the Sacraments; my Heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour.*
